DIY Project: French Cleat Shelf | Build It With Baird
Welcome back to Studio 3B for another episode of Build It With Baird! In this video, Steve Stack takes you through the steps of building a french cleat shelf.
Are you having trouble finding your workbench under your collection of power tools? A french cleat storage system uses floating shelves to organize your tool collection for everything from light drill bits to heavy items like clamps. If thinking of tool storage ideas, look no further.
A french cleat consists of wood pieces with one edge bevel cut at a 45-degree angle. Using fasteners, wood pieces are secured to the wall with the beveled edge facing up. From there, you can make any type of organization tool and use a small cleat (with the beveled edge facing down) as a backer to connect to the french cleat wall.
Before you get started, here’s what you’ll need:
Tape Measure
Speed Square
Framing Square
Level
Sandpaper
Clamps
Brad Nailer
18 Gauge 1-¼” Brad Nails
18 Guage 1-½” Brad Nails
Drill
Kreg 1-¼” Screws
Kreg Pocket-Hole Jig 720PRO
Miter Saw
Table Saw
Compact Router
Wood Glue
Don’t just buy any french cleat system like the ones you can find on Amazon. Use your next home improvement DIY project to show off your woodworking skills and build a french cleat wall from a simple piece of plywood.

Building A High-Quality, Heavy-Duty Wooden Stool | Build It With Baird
Welcome back to Studio 3B for another episode of Build It With Baird! In this video tutorial, Steve Stack shows you how to make a DIY wooden step stool with the help of craftsman Sam Phillips. Sure, you can take the easy route and just go buy a foldable plastic step stool from Ikea or Amazon — or you can make your own wood step stool. Building your own piece of furniture puts the home decor power in your hands. Paint or stain it however you like. Add hinges to make it a folding step stool. Single-step or two-step stool? It’s up to you. Sometimes all you need is a small step to reach that high shelf. No more standing on the kitchen counter! Constructing your own wooden stool allows you to measure and build to the exact measurements you need.
In this episode, Steve and Sam build a single-step stool with a carrying handle that can also act as a safety rail. Adjustments can easily be made to build a 2 step stool.
In need of a kid step stool or toddler step stool? Place non-slip pads at the bottom to make it slip-resistant. Anti-slip protection is important for those of any age, especially children.
Plastic step stools can be flimsy with a limited load capacity. A solid wood step stool is high-quality, heavy-duty, multi-purpose, and easy to assemble. Step up to your top shelf in style with a solid wood footstool.
There’s no limit to its functionality! Use your wooden step stool as a kitchen stool, a bed step stool for high beds, a step ladder, a way for kids to reach the bathroom sink, or a piece of furniture in the living room. A wooden stool looks beautiful sitting next to a wood bed!

Hal Shaffer on Renovating Perfect Hunting Cabins for Families | American Hardwood Advisor
Welcome back to the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode of AHA, host Steve Stack welcomes Hal Shaffer, Host, Managing Partner and Co-Creator of Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters.
Watch as Hal and Steve chat about creating Renovation Hunters, renovating the perfect hunting cabin for families, being an outdoor enthusiast, the importance of family, the first time Hal picked up hunting gear, and how his career led him to Renovation Hunters — and then partnering with Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods!
Hal Shaffer is the host and co-creator of Outdoor Channel’s first-ever home renovation show, Renovation Hunters, but is no stranger to the network! Hal is already the host of Outdoor Channel favorite, Drop Zone! In this AHA episode, Hal tells the story that led him to success on television, from recording radio commercials and even being on a NASCAR pit crew!
The first season of Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters renovated log cabins and vacation homes of varying square feet on three job sites across the country. While Renovation Hunters didn’t build a hunting cabin from the studs up, each log home renovation made a huge difference for the family (some of which didn’t have running water and still utilized outhouses).
Renovation Hunters features crew members of varying woodworking know-how. The team is filled with bright personalities that range from carpentry experts to advanced DIY-ers. Despite their different backstories, they all have one thing in common: a passion for spending time with family and friends in the outdoors. Whether sitting on the front porch together or going out during hunting season, it’s important to spend time with loved ones out in nature.
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods partnered with Renovation Hunters to provide the interior hardwood products used in the projects. The new series is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who love incorporating natural resources into their interior design. One step in the front door, and you’ll see how Baird products impacted these tiny homes and small cabins. Steve Stack and Third-Generation Owner Zach Baird even visited the job sites to install the hardwood products step by step.
Have big hunting cabin plans that only Renovation Hunters can make a reality? Submit your own hunting cabin today! Visit outdoorchannel.com/renovationhunters to submit your off-grid cabin or hunting camp tiny house — as long as it’s not your primary residence! The Renovation Hunters team is currently searching for projects for the next season.

Renovation Hunters’ Co-Creator Chris Filardi on Successful Brand Partnerships | AHA
Welcome to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode, host Steve Stack welcomes Chris Filardi, Managing Partner and Co-Creator of Renovation Hunters, to Studio 3B.
Watch as Chris and Steve talk about his background in construction, successful brand partnerships, finding sponsorships for a new TV show, meeting and partnering with Outdoor Channel veteran Hal Shaffer, tapping into a new market for the network, and the projects featured on the first season of Renovation Hunters.
The Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters traveled to three locations across the country to renovate family hunting cabins, including Hyannis, Nebraska; Critz, Virginia; and Tionesta, Pennsylvania. Contestants submitted their small cabin fixer-uppers for a makeover on the home renovation show.
As Chris explains in this AHA episode, brand collaborations were a major consideration when creating the home improvement show. They wanted brand partners that shared their values and mission — enter Baird Brothers! As a third-generation family business that enjoys hunting together, Baird Brothers was thrilled to sponsor a show that helps families get their dream home away from home to spend time together and get outdoors. One step in the front door of these hunting cabins, and you’ll see the impact Baird Brothers products had on the project. The natural hardwood products elevated the interior design while honoring the nature surrounding it. Steve Stack and Third Generation Owner Zach Baird were on site to install the new products, too!
The creators didn’t stop their marketing efforts with a brand strategy for company partnerships. They actively searched for influencers and makers with a similar target audience. With this strategic marketing campaign in mind, they joined forces with woodworkers of all levels, from experienced craftsmen to makers and DIY-ers. All the makers featured on the show have their own following so that the show could reach a new audience within their target demographic. Along with getting their hands dirty on-site at the projects, the makers naturally helped with outreach and public relations to their individual audiences.
Renovation Hunters and Outdoor Channel coming together was a strategic partnership. Chris explains that the Outdoor Channel’s audience is already filled with handymen and women. So, why not tap into a new market with a home renovation show? The target audience is already there as loyal customers, so why not tailor to more of their interests?
This episode is also available on Spotify, Apple, and anywhere you find podcasts.

Family Leadership of a Third-Generation Family Business | American Hardwood Advisor
It’s a special edition of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode, AHA Host Steve Stack looks back at the best AHA interviews with Baird family members — so far!
See highlights from episodes with:
Paul Baird — President & Co-Founder
Matt Baird — Second Generation Owner & NHLA Certified Lumber Inspector
Lori Baird — Second Generation Owner & Head of Human Resources
Terry Baird — Second Generation Owner & NHLA Certified Lumber Grader
Zach Baird — Third Generation Owner & Plant Engineer
Sarah Baird Schaefer — Third Generation Owner & Accounts Receivable
Listen in as Paul (one-third of the first generation founders) reminisces over the last 60 years of running a third generation family business, Matt reinforces the high-quality expectation for products to the next generation of family ownership, Lori discusses how Baird Brothers has grown (including both family and non-family team members), Terry explains the live sawn process, Zach describes how Baird stays ahead of other manufacturing companies with continuous improvement and Sarah spells out what it’s really like working with a family company (and sharing an office with your father).
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods was founded in 1960 by three brothers and has since seen three generations of family leadership throughout the 60+ years of operation. As a family enterprise, Baird’s business model puts them ahead of other types of companies; everyone from the family business owners to the craftsmen on the shop floor treat each other like family members. While decision-making stays in the family office, each team member is just as important.
Succession planning for the fourth generation, fifth generation and beyond is easy — as long as the family business stays true to its roots. Future generations need to honor this history and roll up their shirtsleeves to get what needs to be done. As far as family conflict goes, always do right for the family company and it will work itself out.

Terry Baird Talks Live Sawn Cut White Oak Flooring | American Hardwood Advisor
Steve Stack is back in Studio 3B for another episode of Amerian Hardwood Advisor! In this episode of the AHA podcast, Steve chats with Terry Baird, Second-Generation Owner of Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods.
Watch as Steve and Terry explain everything you need to know about live sawn character grade white oak! This specialty product is commonly used as live sawn white oak flooring – but it’s also the beautiful backdrop as the siding to our podcast booth in Studio 3B!
Wide plank flooring is especially popular with a live sawn cut. Extra wide plank white oak wood floors show off all the different grain patterns and colors that make natural hardwood so beautiful. Because of this, live sawn white oak flooring is a favorite among homeowners.
What makes live sawn different is the sawing method. Live sawn boards are cut straight across the log in a single direction, slicing through both sapwood and interior heartwood. This method is great for two reasons: very little waste at the sawmill and an unmatched natural hardwood look! This technique shows off the wood’s natural grade, characteristics and grain pattern. Live sawn cut, also known as french cut, can mix plain sawn, rift sawn, and quarter sawn boards for a totally unique solid wood floor!
Homeowners everywhere choose live sawn white oak flooring for many reasons. One, it's gorgeous! Whether you elect to go with prefinished or unfinished hardwood, you’ll get a hardwood floor that will be the envy on the block. Two, its durability! White oak is close to hickory on the Janka Hardness Table, so you know you’re getting a solid wood floor that can withstand traffic! Three, it’s easy to install! White oak live sawn floors from Baird Brothers utilize a tongue & groove installation method.
When it comes to hardwood flooring options, white oak and red oak are tough competitors. Most people don’t know this, but red oak can actually be stained to look eerily similar to white oak! As Terry explains, only hardwood experts can easily spot the difference! Red oak is typically less expensive per square foot than live sawn white oak hardwood flooring, so some homeowners opt for this option and stain it to achieve a similar look.

Antique Wood Plane Review
How long would it take to finish the crown mouldings for just one room in the 19th century?
In this episode of Shop Talk, vintage tool expert Mike Jenkins stops by Studio 3B with his antique wood plane — still in good condition.
A wooden hand plane is much different than the metal planes used today. Craftsmen passed these antique woodworking tools on the wood over and over again until they reached the desired look. Because of the physical demands, using this carpenter tool isn’t a one-man job. Vintage wood planes had additional handles for the craftsman to guide and his apprentice to pull.
The wooden plane’s construction is very simple. It has the plane body, a wedge, a plane blade, and handles. Vintage woodworking plane makers are some of the same experts in hand tools that you know today, including Stanley, Norris and Ohio Tool Co. Vintage Stanley planes are a hot item in old tool auctions. While chisels and scrapers were also commonly used in carpentry, smoothing planes provided more consistency. Whether you scrape or use a planer, you’re sure to make a lot of wood shavings!
Want to know more about Mike Jenkins? Check out his interviews on our American Hardwood Advisor podcast series. Mike has been trading and adding to his old woodworking tool collection for over 40 years. Mike’s hand tool expertise extends beyond the molding plane he discusses in this episode to block planes, rabbet planes, plow planes, dado planes, and much, much more!

Using A Compound Miter Saw For Home Improvement Woodworking And DIY Projects
Whether you’re a woodworking professional or a DIY-er, it’s important to know exactly how to use your power tools. In this episode of Shop Talk, Christy Miller from Oak Hill Millworks stops by Studio 3B to talk with Steve Stack and give tips on how to use a miter saw.
Some people may refer to a standard miter saw as a miter box or chop saw. They have a stop block on the miter saw stand that can lock in place as measured to ensure accurate cuts. However, there are different types of miter saws. Compound miter saws can make dual bevel cuts, angled cuts and can even be used on crown moldings. A sliding compound miter saw can make these cuts on long pieces of wood or wider boards with its adjustable reach. No matter the cutting angle, be sure to use the lock handle to secure the saw in place.
On any home improvement or woodworking project, you must respect your equipment and follow all safety precautions. Clear your work surface and workbench before you begin. Always wear safety glasses for eye protection from flying sawdust. If you’re mostly using power tools, consider wearing ear protection. Extended exposure to loud noises can damage your ear. Never wear loose clothing to avoid getting them stuck in the miter saw blades. Never remove the blade guard from your power miter saw to prevent injury. Follow these basic miter saw safety tips when doing any carpentry or DIY project.
Note: Miter saw blades, along with table saws and circular saws, are sharp and can cause extreme injury if misused. Always use a blade guard to prevent injury.

Table Saw Safety Tips For DIY Woodworking
Table saw safety should not be overlooked, whether you’re a contractor or DIY-er. In this episode of Shop Talk, Christy Miller from Oak Hill Millworks stops by Studio 3B to talk with Steve Stack and give tips on using a tabletop saw.
In a woodworking shop, it’s important to respect your equipment and follow all safety regulations. Be sure to wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying sawdust. Unplug any power tools if you will be touching or moving their parts. If using loud power tools, you may want to consider ear protection. Extended exposure to loud noises can cause damage to your ear. Make sure your workbench and blade height are set to ensure safe use. Keep your tools at an appropriate height to still have full control over your workpiece.
You can get a variety of types of cuts on a table saw, including rip cuts, straight cuts, cross cuts, miter cuts, rabbets, and dado cuts. Although, rabbets and dado cuts may need special additions like a dado blade. Use a tape measure on your piece of wood to ensure an accurate cut.
Table saw blades are sharp and can cause extreme injuries. Always use a blade guard to prevent injury. Some woodworkers even use a push stick on the end of the board so that their hands do not come near the blade. Always keep your hands on the side of the blade entirely, any closer to the spinning blade and you risk injury. Jobsite table saws may differ from site to site. Make sure you know how to prevent kickback from that particular saw.

Interior Door Home Design Trends In 2022
Home design combines many different home decor trends into one overall look. In this episode of Shop Talk, Paul “Smiley” Struharik from Master Plan Builders stops by Studio 3B to talk about current interior design trends for interior doors heading into the new year.
Through the past couple of years, homeowners have used their time at home during the pandemic for a living space makeover, using design styles to make it feel like a new home. These new design ideas span from minimalism, painted cabinetry, dark countertops on kitchen islands, built-in shelving and other paint color trends.
So, what’s currently in style? Natural materials have been a staple for decades — and that isn’t changing next year. Homeowners are using hardwood interior doors to provide an accent piece in their home decor. A mid-century modern home is often enhanced with a real hardwood interior door leading into the laundry room, home office or mudroom. One popular kitchen trend is to add a rustic hardwood door to the kitchen pantry. Baird Brothers offers a wide range of interior doors with different wood tones and finishes that fit perfectly with your decorating ideas. Have supply chain issues? Baird Brothers uses a natural resource with sustainability efforts to reduce environmental impact. Learn more about current home design trends in this Shop Talk episode – and how Baird Brothers can make your design ideas a reality.

Interior Design Trends For Staircases In 2022
The staircase is the main focal point of your home design. It brings together all the interior design styles from the entire home. In this episode of Shop Talk, Paul “Smiley” Struharik from Master Plan Builders stops by Studio 3B to discuss interior design trends for staircases in the new year.
During the pandemic, homeowners have taken this time throughout the last couple of years to makeover their living spaces for a new home feel. Current design ideas span from minimalism, painted cabinetry, dark countertops on kitchen islands, built-in shelving and other paint color trends.
So, what’s the current home design trend for staircases? Natural materials like fine hardwood have been a staple for decades — and that won’t change next year. Homeowners have put the home decor focus on their staircase since it brings all design ideas together. A popular home decor trend is to combine multiple wood tones. This way, any hardwood used in the dining room, living room, or any living space will complement the main stairs. This is especially important when the main staircase is the focal point of an open floor plan.
Natural hardwood is a great choice for your stair parts. Stains give the unique ability to provide different wood tones and color palettes throughout the years. You can even start with stained wood and choose a paint color down the road.
Baird Brothers offers a wide variety of stair parts to fit into whatever your decorating ideas include. Have supply chain issues? Unlike most retailers, Baird Brothers prioritizes sustainability efforts to get the most out of the natural resource. Learn more about current home design trends in this Shop Talk episode – and how Baird Brothers can make your design ideas a reality.

Home Improvement One Door Frame At A Time: Prehung DIY Interior Door Installation
Door replacement is a simple remodeling job for homeowners. Whether it's a closet door, room entry door, bifold doors, french doors, or pocket door, the door opening is improved with a high quality wooden interior door. Even replacing a single door can improve your home decor. But did you know that replacing existing doors (or installing new doors) is a great DIY project with little installation cost? In this video, Jon Ulicney walks through installing a prehung interior door. Learn tips and tricks for installing, like when to drill holes in the side jamb, how to line up the hinge side of the door with the studs, and how to avoid unappealing nail holes in the door frame.
A slab door does not come with any attached hardware or hinges. Prehung doors have the hinges already installed, making installation services easy without needing to hire a handyman. The type of door (solid core and hollow core) determines which hinge is needed to work properly. Prehung interior doors from Baird Brothers come with the proper hinge for the door’s weight, so why not replace your old door today?
