Antique Wood Plane Review
How long would it take to finish the crown mouldings for just one room in the 19th century?
In this episode of Shop Talk, vintage tool expert Mike Jenkins stops by Studio 3B with his antique wood plane — still in good condition.
A wooden hand plane is much different than the metal planes used today. Craftsmen passed these antique woodworking tools on the wood over and over again until they reached the desired look. Because of the physical demands, using this carpenter tool isn’t a one-man job. Vintage wood planes had additional handles for the craftsman to guide and his apprentice to pull.
The wooden plane’s construction is very simple. It has the plane body, a wedge, a plane blade, and handles. Vintage woodworking plane makers are some of the same experts in hand tools that you know today, including Stanley, Norris and Ohio Tool Co. Vintage Stanley planes are a hot item in old tool auctions. While chisels and scrapers were also commonly used in carpentry, smoothing planes provided more consistency. Whether you scrape or use a planer, you’re sure to make a lot of wood shavings!
Want to know more about Mike Jenkins? Check out his interviews on our American Hardwood Advisor podcast series. Mike has been trading and adding to his old woodworking tool collection for over 40 years. Mike’s hand tool expertise extends beyond the molding plane he discusses in this episode to block planes, rabbet planes, plow planes, dado planes, and much, much more!

Using A Compound Miter Saw For Home Improvement Woodworking And DIY Projects
Whether you’re a woodworking professional or a DIY-er, it’s important to know exactly how to use your power tools. In this episode of Shop Talk, Christy Miller from Oak Hill Millworks stops by Studio 3B to talk with Steve Stack and give tips on how to use a miter saw.
Some people may refer to a standard miter saw as a miter box or chop saw. They have a stop block on the miter saw stand that can lock in place as measured to ensure accurate cuts. However, there are different types of miter saws. Compound miter saws can make dual bevel cuts, angled cuts and can even be used on crown moldings. A sliding compound miter saw can make these cuts on long pieces of wood or wider boards with its adjustable reach. No matter the cutting angle, be sure to use the lock handle to secure the saw in place.
On any home improvement or woodworking project, you must respect your equipment and follow all safety precautions. Clear your work surface and workbench before you begin. Always wear safety glasses for eye protection from flying sawdust. If you’re mostly using power tools, consider wearing ear protection. Extended exposure to loud noises can damage your ear. Never wear loose clothing to avoid getting them stuck in the miter saw blades. Never remove the blade guard from your power miter saw to prevent injury. Follow these basic miter saw safety tips when doing any carpentry or DIY project.
Note: Miter saw blades, along with table saws and circular saws, are sharp and can cause extreme injury if misused. Always use a blade guard to prevent injury.

Table Saw Safety Tips For DIY Woodworking
Table saw safety should not be overlooked, whether you’re a contractor or DIY-er. In this episode of Shop Talk, Christy Miller from Oak Hill Millworks stops by Studio 3B to talk with Steve Stack and give tips on using a tabletop saw.
In a woodworking shop, it’s important to respect your equipment and follow all safety regulations. Be sure to wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying sawdust. Unplug any power tools if you will be touching or moving their parts. If using loud power tools, you may want to consider ear protection. Extended exposure to loud noises can cause damage to your ear. Make sure your workbench and blade height are set to ensure safe use. Keep your tools at an appropriate height to still have full control over your workpiece.
You can get a variety of types of cuts on a table saw, including rip cuts, straight cuts, cross cuts, miter cuts, rabbets, and dado cuts. Although, rabbets and dado cuts may need special additions like a dado blade. Use a tape measure on your piece of wood to ensure an accurate cut.
Table saw blades are sharp and can cause extreme injuries. Always use a blade guard to prevent injury. Some woodworkers even use a push stick on the end of the board so that their hands do not come near the blade. Always keep your hands on the side of the blade entirely, any closer to the spinning blade and you risk injury. Jobsite table saws may differ from site to site. Make sure you know how to prevent kickback from that particular saw.

Interior Door Home Design Trends In 2022
Home design combines many different home decor trends into one overall look. In this episode of Shop Talk, Paul “Smiley” Struharik from Master Plan Builders stops by Studio 3B to talk about current interior design trends for interior doors heading into the new year.
Through the past couple of years, homeowners have used their time at home during the pandemic for a living space makeover, using design styles to make it feel like a new home. These new design ideas span from minimalism, painted cabinetry, dark countertops on kitchen islands, built-in shelving and other paint color trends.

One popular kitchen trend is to add a rustic hardwood door to the kitchen pantry. Baird Brothers offers a wide range of interior doors with different wood tones and finishes that fit perfectly with your decorating ideas. Have supply chain issues? Baird Brothers uses a natural resource with sustainability efforts to reduce environmental impact.
