DIY Home Improvement: Sanding & Refinishing Hardwood Floors | Build It With Baird
Welcome back to another episode of Build It With Baird! In this episode, Steve Stack ventures out of Studio 3B to the job site with Mike Jones of Mike Jones Hardwood Flooring. Watch as Mike shows Steve the process he goes through when refinishing hardwood floors for a client.
Hardwood floor refinishing is a classic home improvement project — especially for new homeowners. In this BIWB, the client bought the home and wanted to upgrade the entire floor. The wood floors between the two rooms had an uneven divider, the floorboards weren’t flush with the fireplace and removing a partial wall left voids in the solid hardwood floors. In this home, the wood floors experienced some water damage and discoloration. Sanding and recoating the floor with a new finish made them even again – both in level and color.
Mike Jones and his team used a floor sander, applied a floor finish with a paintbrush, added a picture frame moulding around the fireplace and installed new floor pieces in the voids. Using a pry bar, they removed the now unnecessary tongue and groove sections. The new wood stain made every square foot of the room look uniform. Always remember to remove excess stain to avoid uneven coating.
There’s more than one reason to sand your floor as a DIY project. Not only can it remove the old finish, but it can also eliminate deep scratches and gouges without buffing every single one (or using wood filler and a putty knife). Before you start, it’s important to wear safety glasses and a dust mask/respirator to protect yourself. You can use an orbital sander, floor buffer or fine grit sandpaper. After you sand the floor, you can apply a top coat of polyurethane finish as a sealer to protect the wood. Depending on your floor, you can use either an oil-based polyurethane or water-based polyurethane.

DIY Project: French Cleat Shelf | Build It With Baird
Welcome back to Studio 3B for another episode of Build It With Baird! In this video, Steve Stack takes you through the steps of building a french cleat shelf.
Are you having trouble finding your workbench under your collection of power tools? A french cleat storage system uses floating shelves to organize your tool collection for everything from light drill bits to heavy items like clamps. If thinking of tool storage ideas, look no further.
A french cleat consists of wood pieces with one edge bevel cut at a 45-degree angle. Using fasteners, wood pieces are secured to the wall with the beveled edge facing up. From there, you can make any type of organization tool and use a small cleat (with the beveled edge facing down) as a backer to connect to the french cleat wall.
Before you get started, here’s what you’ll need:
Tape Measure
Speed Square
Framing Square
Level
Sandpaper
Clamps
Brad Nailer
18 Gauge 1-¼” Brad Nails
18 Guage 1-½” Brad Nails
Drill
Kreg 1-¼” Screws
Kreg Pocket-Hole Jig 720PRO
Miter Saw
Table Saw
Compact Router
Wood Glue
Don’t just buy any french cleat system like the ones you can find on Amazon. Use your next home improvement DIY project to show off your woodworking skills and build a french cleat wall from a simple piece of plywood.

Building A High-Quality, Heavy-Duty Wooden Stool | Build It With Baird
Welcome back to Studio 3B for another episode of Build It With Baird! In this video tutorial, Steve Stack shows you how to make a DIY wooden step stool with the help of craftsman Sam Phillips. Sure, you can take the easy route and just go buy a foldable plastic step stool from Ikea or Amazon — or you can make your own wood step stool. Building your own piece of furniture puts the home decor power in your hands. Paint or stain it however you like. Add hinges to make it a folding step stool. Single-step or two-step stool? It’s up to you. Sometimes all you need is a small step to reach that high shelf. No more standing on the kitchen counter! Constructing your own wooden stool allows you to measure and build to the exact measurements you need.
In this episode, Steve and Sam build a single-step stool with a carrying handle that can also act as a safety rail. Adjustments can easily be made to build a 2 step stool.
In need of a kid step stool or toddler step stool? Place non-slip pads at the bottom to make it slip-resistant. Anti-slip protection is important for those of any age, especially children.
Plastic step stools can be flimsy with a limited load capacity. A solid wood step stool is high-quality, heavy-duty, multi-purpose, and easy to assemble. Step up to your top shelf in style with a solid wood footstool.
There’s no limit to its functionality! Use your wooden step stool as a kitchen stool, a bed step stool for high beds, a step ladder, a way for kids to reach the bathroom sink, or a piece of furniture in the living room. A wooden stool looks beautiful sitting next to a wood bed!

Amy Shields Answers, “Is Wood a Renewable Resource?” | American Hardwood Advisor
And we’re back with another episode of American Hardwood Advisor! In this episode, AHA host Steve Stack is joined by Amy Shields, executive director of Allegheny Hardwood Utilization Group, to discuss the goal behind the Real American Hardwood Coalition.
Watch as Steve and Amy discuss the misconceptions about the use of wood products affecting the ecosystem, healthy forest management, carbon dioxide emissions, renewable energy resources and sustainability efforts by the forest products industry.
So to answer the question, “Is wood a renewable resource?” The answer is YES. Wood products are actually the greenest building materials you can use thanks to their renewable energy. They can even help combat climate change by storing carbon dioxide and preventing air pollution.
One common misconception is that using this natural resource as a building material promotes deforestation, but that is not the case. With sustainable forestry efforts, loggers ensure a proper ratio of young, middle-aged and older trees to provide proper biodiversity within the forest, ultimately helping vegetation and wildlife thrive. They take down older trees before they release greenhouse gases and replant younger trees in their place.
At Baird Brothers, we utilize wood as a renewable source of energy. The wood energy provided by burning the sawdust and other woody biomass created in our shop actually fuels our entire facility with clean energy. This energy production allows us to manage our own energy supply and get the most out of the raw materials.

Rustic Cabin Interior Design | Renovation Hunters’ Project Critz | AHA
Welcome to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this special episode, host Steve Stack is joined by Todd Joyce - with appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Joyce - to reminisce on the last year enjoying their freshly renovated rustic cabin, thanks to Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters.
Watch as Steve and Todd discuss everything Renovation Hunters did to the rustic cabin interior (and exterior), enjoying nature, his family’s history with the previous homeowners and their rustic retreat. Renovation Hunters brought the family’s biggest log cabin interior design ideas to life! The week-long project renovated the log house interior design style by bringing in more natural materials, connecting the rustic log cabin to the outdoors.
The team at Renovation Hunters made the most out of the small cabin with elevated rustic decor ideas. They elevated the home decor, bringing new rustic kitchen ideas to the brand-new dining table (made of natural materials from Baird Brothers). They also provided solar power, a reliable water source, a luxury deer blind (that’s basically a cozy cabin itself), an outdoor shower, and even a skinning shed. The log cabin decor in the living area was just a start; the project also involved renovating the outdoor deck and including bedroom ideas to get the women of the family to stay for the night.
Renovation Hunters is a new series on Outdoor Channel where a team of craftsmen and expert DIY-ers come together to renovate log homes and cabin styles in need of some TLC. When the team visited Critz, the lakeside rustic-style cabin design was restored with some much-needed upgrades.

Hal Shaffer, Kevin Tarkovich & Chris Filardi on Renovation Hunters’ Project Tionesta | AHA
It’s another episode of American Hardwood Advisor! In this AHA, host Steve Stack is joined by the creative team behind the Outdoor Channel’s first renovation show, Renovation Hunters: Hal Shaffer, host and managing partner/co-creator; Kevin Tarkovich, lead contractor; and Chris Filardi, managing partner/co-creator. The team took time to reveal behind-the-scenes stories from Project Tionesta when they visited Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods in Canfield Ohio to tour the sawmill and Studio 3B.
Watch as Hal, Kevin, Chris and Steve reflect on the last project of the new series’ first season, updating an old cabin while honoring history, meeting the family that owned the Forest County getaway, meeting the people around the Tionesta area in western Pennsylvania, overcoming challenges, and all the ways Baird Brothers’ products transformed the cabin.
Renovation Hunters is a new TV show on the Outdoor Channel that takes a team of experienced DIY-ers and expert craftsmen across the country to renovate family getaway cabins. The home improvement team updates these properties to honor family history while preserving the home for generations.
The third Renovation Hunters project in season one of the TV show took the team to Tionesta, Pennsylvania, surrounded by Warren, Elk, Jefferson, Venango, and Clarion Counties. Far from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, the people who live in the Tionesta area fully embraced Renovation Hunters. One family even offered their own home for the renovation crew to use as a break and rest area!
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods was the provider of fine hardwood products used throughout the home improvement projects. Adding a natural resource throughout the interior design of the cabin helped immerse the getaway cabin in its environment.

Raechal Woodworks From the Renovation Hunters’ Tionesta Job Site | American Hardwood Advisor
Steve Stack is back with another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast, but not from Studio 3B! In this episode of AHA, Steve is on set at Renovation Hunters’ Project Tionesta talking with one of the makers, Raechal Petris (known as Raechal Woodworks).
Watch as Steve and Raechal discuss how tasks are split out on the job site for the Outdoor Channel’s first-ever renovation show, how she got her DIY woodworking start, and the benefits of working directly with Steve Stack from Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods.
The first season of the Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters took the team to three locations across the nation: Hyannis, Nebraska; Critz, Virginia; and Tionesta, Pennsylvania (located in Forest County near Allegheny). From Nebraska to western Pennsylvania, the team renovated family getaway cabins so that they could continue to use the cabin for generations.
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods partnered with the home improvement TV show as the provider of several natural hardwood products. The new series celebrates families getting together in outdoor spaces, so partnering with a family company that provides a natural resource just made sense!

Renovation Hunters’ Kevin Tarkovich on the Highest-Quality Wood Products | AHA
Welcome back to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode, AHA host Steve Stack travels to Tioensta, Pennsylvania to visit the job site for Renovation Hunters’ third project of the first season and talk with Kevin Tarkovich, the lead contractor for Renovation Hunters. Watch as Kevin and Steve discuss the need for high-quality products, the wood products used on the show, how Baird Brothers stands out from other distributors and preserving the family traditions of the cabin.
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods partnered with Renovation Huntes to provide the new TV show with the highest quality hardwood lumber and building materials. Renovation Hunters is the Outdoor Channel’s first-ever home improvement show. In the series, remodelers visit three family cabins to renovate them for generations of family homeowners to come. The Tionesta project even features a new product exclusive to the show!
Baird Brothers is the go-to retailer for high-quality wood products like hardwood flooring, interior doors, shiplap, mouldings, millwork, stair treads, and more. Visit the showroom in Canfield, Ohio to see the species available (red oak, white oak, hickory, walnut, cherry, poplar, and more), prefinished options, coatings, sealers, wood stains and more.
Why choose hardwood flooring for your floor supply instead of flooring options like tile or laminate? Hardwood floors last for decades — and stay in style! If you want a different look, a good sanding and wood stain makes it feel like an entirely new floor.

Outdoor Enthusiast Hal Shaffer Talks Renovating Family Hunting Camps | American Hardwood Advisor
Welcome back to another episode of American Hardwood Advisor! In this podcast episode, AHA Host Steve Stack steps out from Studio 3B to travel to Tionesta, Pennsylvania, the home of Renovation Hunters’ final project of the first season. He steps away from the week-long tiny house remodel to talk with Hal Shaffer, host of Outdoor Channel’s Drop Zone and newest series Renovation Hunters.
Watch as Hal and Steve discuss the importance of families getting together, providing the perfect hunting cabin for a much-deserving family, renovating an off-grid cabin with no running water, Baird Brothers being a hands-on brand partner, remodeling hunting camps for generations of families, and enjoying the outdoors.
Hal Shaffer is the host and co-creator of Renovation Hunters, the Outdoor Channel’s first-ever renovation show. Being the outdoor enthusiast he is, Hal is already seen on the channel as the host of the hit show Drop Zone.
Renovation Hunters features woodworkers of different skill levels, from advanced DIY-ers to experts in carpentry, all working toward the same goal: providing a comfortable space for generations of family to spend time together and enjoy outdoor spaces (even if that meant altering the floor plan). The first season featured projects varying greatly in square feet, a renovated front porch, specialty organization for hunting gear, a log cabin that still utilized an outhouse, and families in need of a more comfortable log home to stay in during hunting season.
Baird Brothers’ involvement in the new tv series is evident with one step in the front door. In fact, Steve even visited the location in Tionesta before the project was selected to see first-hand the types of wood products that would look great in the small cabin. But it doesn’t stop there! Steve, along with some Baird family members, visited the job sites to share their woodworking know-how, showing how to install their products step-by-step.

Renovation Hunters is a new series on Outdoor Channel where a team of craftsmen and expert DIY-ers come together to renovate a family getaway cabin in need of some TLC.

Renovation Hunters Crew on Renovating a Historic Home in Hyannis | American Hardwood Advisor
Welcome to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode, host Steve Stack sits down with the creative team and lead contractor of Outdoor Channel’s new home remodeling show, Renovation Hunters. Hal Shaffer, host and managing partner/co-creator, Kevin Tarkovich, lead contractor, and Chris Filardi, managing partner/co-creator, talk with Steve during their visit to Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods.
Watch as Steve, Hal, Kevin and Chris discuss the first time they walked through the historic home, updating the living space for a future family, building materials from partners, and all that went into renovating a historic home. The Renovation Hunters team visited Baird Brothers to see the craftsmanship that went into the woodwork for the show’s interior design.
Renovation Hunters is the first home renovation show on the Outdoor Channel. In the new series, craftsmen and expert DIY-ers came together to makeover old homes for families to enjoy for generations. The first project for the show in Hyannis, Nebraska tested the team. “Fixer upper” was an understatement for this old house. The team had 8 days for a home improvement miracle: original windows needed replaced, drywall needed to be redone, and a burst water pipe led to water damage and an accidental ice rink in the kitchen, among other challenges.
Renovating old houses isn’t the only mission behind Renovation Hunters. It’s not about resale or real estate value; the team is passionate about providing comfortable homes that families can enjoy together and spend time outdoors. The older homes featured on the show are not everyday homes but are instead hunting cabins or vacation homes shared by families. For Project Hyannis, there were no homeowners. Instead, the town as a whole benefited from the new construction of the 19th-century historic house. The historic building was a center point of the town, but Renovation Hunters gave it new life.

Behind the Scenes on Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters in Hyannis, Nebraska | AHA
Welcome back to the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode of AHA, host Steve Stack is joined by Zach Baird, third-generation owner of Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods, as they reminisce over the first project on Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters.
Watch as Stack and Zach provide a behind-the-scenes look at the first project in Hyannis, Nebraska. The pair talk about meeting the townspeople, the Renovation Hunters team and all the wildlife surrounding the Sandhills! While every project on Renovation Hunters provides a vacation home for generations of families to spend time together in outdoor spaces, the first project was a 118-year-old house on the tiny town’s main street.
The first season of Renovation Hunters visited small towns in America from Nebraska to western Pennsylvania. One step through the front door and Baird Brother’s impact on these projects is noticeable. Baird provided hardwood products, including lumber, kitchen fixtures and even DIY projects with added functionality to the home renovation series. However, Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods was more than just a sponsor. After a quick check-in, Zach and Stack got their hands dirty to help install their products and help the build wherever needed.
The time spent with family is priceless, whether you’re at a picnic area, hunting, or just sitting around in the family room — and both Baird Brothers and Renovation Hunters take that seriously. So, do you have a family-friendly hunting/vacation cabin that needs fixing up? Submit to be considered for next year’s season at www.outdoorchannel.com/renovationhunters

How It’s Made: Tongue and Groove Hardwood Flooring
We’re back with another look inside the shop at Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods! Watch as Steve Stack and Terry Baird take a trip through the optimization line and router to show you how defects are removed from the hardwood lumber.
At Baird Brothers, we use a combination of high technology and decades of human experience to ensure defect-free hardwood floorboards. Terry Baird, 2nd Generation Owner of Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods, gives a tutorial on how he hand marks defects like dents and cracks before they go through the wood scanner. This ensures that when you buy solid hardwood flooring from Baird Brothers, you know you’re getting a high-quality product.
Is it your first time installing new floors as a homeowner? Tongue and groove plank flooring is the best choice for DIY hardwood floor installation. They have a thin piece of material on one end and a slot on the other so they can pop into place over your subfloor. You can install your entire floor without having to nail down anything! They fit together perfectly, which makes installing hardwood floors a breeze — you can even do it yourself.
Installing hardwood floors is a great DIY project for your home improvement to-do list, but it doesn’t end there. Make sure to take care of your hardwood floors, especially when they’re in high-traffic areas, so they last for years to come.
Every few years, you’ll want to refinish your floors (even if you buy them prefinished), which would include both using a sander and then applying a polyurethane sealer to finish it. Never use a water-based sealant as it could cause water damage. Different types of wood may require different maintenance to keep them intact. Before installation, let your hardwood floorboards sit in the room for 24 hours so they can acclimate.

Custom Crown Mouldings | How It's Made
We're thrilled to take you on an immersive journey into the world of woodworking and craftsmanship. More specifically, we’ll show you how we make our custom crown mouldings. (You may have also seen it spelt incorrectly as “crown molding” by non-professionals.) Discover the meticulous process behind the creation of our exquisite custom crown mouldings that add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space.
Along the way, you’ll meet Roger from our tooling department, which is where the amazing quality of this fine hardwood product begins. We’ll also talk with Bill Moss, a moulder technician, about taking the tooling from Roger and applying it to our moulding machines.
Custom crown moulding is a great home improvement method for giving your home a great finishing touch. It’s amazing how a custom-designed piece of crown moulding can change the entire appearance of a room. Installing a little trim to your living room or dining room is a great DIY project that goes a long way — and Baird Brothers can help you design the perfect fit.
Whether you're an avid woodworking enthusiast, a design aficionado, or simply curious about the magic that turns wood into wonders, this video offers a front-row seat to the creation of custom crown mouldings that elevate interiors to a whole new level. How It’s Made: Wooden Dowel Rods
We’re making sawdust today at Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods! Watch as Steve Stack takes a trip through the facility to the dowel maker as Dale Lanterman, also known as “Dowel Rod Dale,” shows us how to make dowels.
Watch the full video to see how “Dowel Rod Dale” uses a dowel-making jig to make wooden dowels from a piece of wood. The wood is cut into strips and inspected to remove defects then continues down the line to the dowel cutter. With different drill bits, a dowel jig can turn any block of wood into a perfectly sized dowel.
Wooden dowels are used for:
• Spindles
• Ballet bars
• Joinery
• Curtain rods
• Stair parts
• So much more!
Trying to make a homemade dowel can mean using different woodworking tools, from table saws to planers. Skip the tutorial and see how wooden dowels are made by professionals.
Whether you need wooden dowels for your next DIY woodworking project or need your own dowel design, you can find what you need at Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods. Baird’s dowel stock has different-sized dowels to fit your needs. There are large dowels that can go up to eight feet or smaller wood dowels that hold a project together in tandem with wood glue.

Antique Wood Plane Review
How long would it take to finish the crown mouldings for just one room in the 19th century?
In this episode of Shop Talk, vintage tool expert Mike Jenkins stops by Studio 3B with his antique wood plane — still in good condition.
A wooden hand plane is much different than the metal planes used today. Craftsmen passed these antique woodworking tools on the wood over and over again until they reached the desired look. Because of the physical demands, using this carpenter tool isn’t a one-man job. Vintage wood planes had additional handles for the craftsman to guide and his apprentice to pull.
The wooden plane’s construction is very simple. It has the plane body, a wedge, a plane blade, and handles. Vintage woodworking plane makers are some of the same experts in hand tools that you know today, including Stanley, Norris and Ohio Tool Co. Vintage Stanley planes are a hot item in old tool auctions. While chisels and scrapers were also commonly used in carpentry, smoothing planes provided more consistency. Whether you scrape or use a planer, you’re sure to make a lot of wood shavings!

Using A Compound Miter Saw For Home Improvement Woodworking And DIY Projects
Whether you’re a woodworking professional or a DIY-er, it’s important to know exactly how to use your power tools. In this episode of Shop Talk, Christy Miller from Oak Hill Millworks stops by Studio 3B to talk with Steve Stack and give tips on how to use a miter saw.
Some people may refer to a standard miter saw as a miter box or chop saw. They have a stop block on the miter saw stand that can lock in place as measured to ensure accurate cuts. However, there are different types of miter saws. Compound miter saws can make dual bevel cuts, angled cuts and can even be used on crown moldings. A sliding compound miter saw can make these cuts on long pieces of wood or wider boards with its adjustable reach. No matter the cutting angle, be sure to use the lock handle to secure the saw in place.
On any home improvement or woodworking project, you must respect your equipment and follow all safety precautions. Clear your work surface and workbench before you begin. Always wear safety glasses for eye protection from flying sawdust. If you’re mostly using power tools, consider wearing ear protection. Extended exposure to loud noises can damage your ear. Never wear loose clothing to avoid getting them stuck in the miter saw blades. Never remove the blade guard from your power miter saw to prevent injury. Follow these basic miter saw safety tips when doing any carpentry or DIY project.
Note: Miter saw blades, along with table saws and circular saws, are sharp and can cause extreme injury if misused. Always use a blade guard to prevent injury.

Table Saw Safety Tips For DIY Woodworking
Table saw safety should not be overlooked, whether you’re a contractor or DIY-er. In this episode of Shop Talk, Christy Miller from Oak Hill Millworks stops by Studio 3B to talk with Steve Stack and give tips on using a tabletop saw.
In a woodworking shop, it’s important to respect your equipment and follow all safety regulations. Be sure to wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying sawdust. Unplug any power tools if you will be touching or moving their parts. If using loud power tools, you may want to consider ear protection. Extended exposure to loud noises can cause damage to your ear. Make sure your workbench and blade height are set to ensure safe use. Keep your tools at an appropriate height to still have full control over your workpiece.
You can get a variety of types of cuts on a table saw, including rip cuts, straight cuts, cross cuts, miter cuts, rabbets, and dado cuts. Although, rabbets and dado cuts may need special additions like a dado blade. Use a tape measure on your piece of wood to ensure an accurate cut.
Table saw blades are sharp and can cause extreme injuries. Always use a blade guard to prevent injury. Some woodworkers even use a push stick on the end of the board so that their hands do not come near the blade. Always keep your hands on the side of the blade entirely, any closer to the spinning blade and you risk injury. Jobsite table saws may differ from site to site. Make sure you know how to prevent kickback from that particular saw.
