DIY Installation of Shiplap Wall Panels | Shop Talk
DIY Installation of Shiplap Wall Panels | Shop Talk
Whether it’s for your mudroom or a living room accent wall, shiplap wall panels can make a beautiful interior wall for your home.
Shiplap is similar in appearance to slat walls, beadboard, and wainscoting, but they have a different profile and purpose. Shiplap panels are made to cover an entire wall and tie in beautifully with the moulding and other millwork in your home.
In this video, Steve Stack covers the basics for your shiplap installation DIY project. As a homeowner, high-quality home decor with easy installation is the dream. That’s what makes tongue and groove shiplap paneling such a great choice! It’s a hassle-free way to bring the gorgeous look of real wood into your home.
Able to be placed over studs or directly on top of drywall, shiplap boards take little effort to get into place. Especially with tongue and groove wood wall panels, you can install nickel gap paneling with ease. It’s the simplest (and prettiest) home improvement project you could do.
Wood shiplap gives you plenty of options for how you choose to beautify your home with your wall decor. Whether you put the smooth or rough side out, keep the natural wood grain look or a solid color, shiplap decorative wall paneling is reversible and paintable. Or, you can whitewash it for a good balance. These wall planks are an excellent choice for any home.

Comparing Wood Countertop Options For Your Kitchen Makeover | Shop Talk
Should you add a wood countertop to your home?
In this episode of Shop Talk, host Steve Stack is joined by Nicole Marcellino from New Day Cleveland to discuss the difference between butcher block countertops and plank countertops.
Butcherblock counters are assembled so that the edge grain is exposed. On the other hand, wide-plank countertops have the face grain exposed. How much wood grain pattern you want to see could be a deciding factor on which wood counter to choose.
If you’re going to be prepping food directly on your kitchen countertops, check which type of wood species has the best food-safe and water-resistant properties to prevent warping. Birch, Brazilian cherry, hickory, red oak and white oak all have different food-safe qualities and are more susceptible to dents. For these reasons, it’s hard to beat the hard maple end-grain butcher block countertops for food prep needs.
If you want to give your kitchen a makeover, wood counters, whether they are edge-grain butcher block counters or wood plank countertops, are the best way to update your kitchen counter, dining table top, bar top or kitchen island top. Solid wood cutting boards are also available at Baird Brothers.
Sure, you can settle for a laminate island top — or you can wow your guest with a unique, custom-made wooden countertop!

A Guide to Different Types of Interior Doors | Shop Talk
In this episode of Shop Talk, host Steve Stack is joined by Nicole Marcellino from New Day Cleveland to go over the different types of interior doors.
If you’re looking for a home improvement project that makes a huge difference in your design style, try a new interior door! There are plenty of interior door styles to choose from that fit into all types of home decor.
Pocket doors are a homeowner’s space-saving dream! They slide inside the wall so you don’t need to account for the space of a swinging door.
Sliding barn doors are a popular choice right now. They add a unique interior design style to your door frame.
Sliding doors, in general, are hot right now as homeowners are tired of giving up space for doors that swing open.
Flush doors have a sleek and minimalist design that seamlessly blend in with any interior design. This type of door is commonly used for pantries to save space.
Panel doors can come in all types of designs based on your personal style.
French doors add a timeless charm to any room — and you can add glass panes to bring in some natural light from room to room.
Bifold doors are a type of hinged door that uses an innovative folding style to save space. They are a common door option for laundry rooms.
In addition to the variety of styles, there are different types of doors classified by their construction.
Solid core doors have enhanced durability and sound insulation thanks to their dense core material.
Hollow core doors have a lightweight construction and are, you guessed it, hollow on the inside. Pantry and closet doors typically use this type of door.
Solid wood doors provide enhanced durability with the added warmth and character of natural wood.
Glass doors are made of a combination of glass panels and solid wood.
Interior doors aren’t just a divider from room to room; they’re a way to show off your interior design ideas with different styles. Make your entryway your own! You can even try a pre-hung door from Baird Brothers that makes door installation a breeze, thanks to all the hardware already being installed.

Quick & Easy DIY Wood Fireplace Mantel | Shop Talk
Whether it’s for a fireplace surround or a simple piece of home decor, it’s hard to find something that ties a room together quite like a classic wood mantel. Both wood and brick fireplace mantels are beautiful in terms of decoration and function, making them a great addition to any living room.
In this video, Steve Stack gives a tutorial for yet another great DIY project for woodworking fanatics. With this quick and easy method, you can give your tired old fireplace a complete makeover by replacing it with a brand-new DIY fireplace mantel.
Even if you don’t have a fireplace, these mantels look great anywhere in the house. With little more than a few pieces of Baird Brothers hardwood, a miter saw, and a nail gun, such as a brad nailer, you can have an all-new mantel in your home in just a few hours. Get some grit sandpaper and wood stain for when you’re done, and the home improvement is nearly instantaneous!
The best part yet? Installation is easy and effortless! Just screw a 2x4 or another type of wood beam into the studs so the front piece of your mantel fits right on it, giving it a clean, built-in look. You won’t need to worry about a mess with wood glue or needing wood filler for nail holes, the entire design is simple and clean.
The biggest problem with this project is needing more decorating ideas now that you completed your fireplace makeover with a DIY wood mantel. Put your photos and decorations on the top of the mantel shelf or hang up some stockings on the side of the mantel during Christmas, the sky's the limit!

Give Your Entryway a Makeover With a DIY Mudroom Bench | Shop Talk
In this episode, Shop Talk Host Steve Stack is joined by David Moss from New Day Cleveland to show off the woodworker-friendly mudroom bench DIY project.
This DIY mudroom bench has built-in cubbies and a bench seat, making it the perfect addition to your entryway or laundry room. Mudroom lockers are the perfect place for kids to store their things — with the storage bench being the perfect place to sit and take off your shoes as soon as you walk in the house. (They can even be used for shoe storage.) You can add coat hooks to the top of the bench as the perfect place for backpacks and jackets.
The best part of these DIY entryway bench plans is that they are completely adaptable to your needs. If your entryway is on the narrow side, you can make it slimmer. Tall hallways? Add more length to the top of the bench. It’s a DIYer’s dream!
Tools needed for this project include a miter saw, pocket hole jig, grit sandpaper, tape measure, wood glue, brad nailer, Kreg screws, table saw, and more.
